Boba scores 20+ in the close loss to UMBC at home

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's basketball team fell in a thriller against UMBC 64-63 at home on Saturday.

Martina Boba tallied 24 points as the game's leading scorer. Mia Mancini posted 19 points. Mariona Planes Fortuny grabbed 13 rebounds.

How it Happened

  • UMBC took control in the first quarter, jumping out to a 15-4 before the Bulldogs went on a 7-4 run to end the quarter. Boba tallied five, and Mancini scored two, making the score 19-11 after one.
  • Mancini and Boba recorded an 8-0 run on their own, with Mancini scoring six and Boba posting two, to tie the game at 19.
  • The half concluded on a 15-12 run by the Retrievers, resulting in a 34-31 lead for UMBC. Boba posted six, Silvia Gonzales made a three, Fortuny had two, and Macnini hit a free throw.
  • The Bulldogs outscored the Retrievers 17-16 in a closely contested third quarter, resulting in a 50-48 lead for UMBC. Megan Bodziony and Boba tallied five, Mancini had four, and Lucie Castagn posted three, resulting in a 50-48 lead for the Retrievers.
  •  In the first minute of the fourth quarter, Mancini nailed a deep three to give the Black and Gold the lead (51-50).
  • UMBC tallied three, and Kemari Reynolds made a free-throw, giving the Retrievers the lead at the seven-minute mark (54-52).
  • At the three-minute mark, UMBC earned a 60-58 lead, as both teams tallied six points.
  • The Retrievers tallied two, and Mancini hit a wing triple to put the Bulldogs within one with 1:30 left in the game (62-61).
  • The Retrievers missed, and Bryant called a timeout, resulting in a Fortuny layup with 11 seconds left in the contest (63-62).
  • UMBC then missed a shot but got the offensive rebound and converted the layup, giving the Bulldogs three seconds and no timeouts to respond (64-63).
