Bulldogs fall to UMBC on buzzer-beater in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MD. – The Bryant University women's basketball team fell to UMBC on a last-second putback by a score of 54-52.

Mariona Planes Fortuny recorded 18 points, and Mia Mancini posted 17.

How it Happened

  • Mancini hit a three-pointer at the eight-minute mark to start the game.
  • The defenses clamped down, and both teams went scoreless for the next three minutes before Nia Scott hit two from the line, giving Bryant a 5-0 lead.
  • UMBC would close the first quarter on an 11-6 run, tying the game at 11. Mancini had seven, and Fortuny and Scott posted two.
  • The Retrievers tallied four quick points before Fortuny nailed a transition triple, cutting the lead to one (15-14) with seven minutes remaining in the half.

  • For the next two minutes. UMBC outscored the Bulldogs 6-4, making the Bryant lead one (47-46) with six minutes left.
  • Kemari Reynolds would go 1-2 at the line with four minutes left, and the Retrievers hit a three, giving them a 49-48 lead.
  • Fortuny was fouled and hit two at the line, giving the lead back to the Bulldogs (50-49).
  • UMBC hit a jumper, and then Fortuny was fouled on the next play and hit both, making the score 52-51 with one minute left in the game.
  • The Retrievers then went 1-2 at the line with 30 seconds left in the contest, tying the game at 52.
  • The Bulldogs then suffered a shot clock violation, leaving three seconds on the clock.
  • UMBC missed the first shot but made the second off a rebound to earn a 54-52 victory over the Black and Gold.
