Brown takes Ocean State Cup with 17-7 win

GREEN'S HAT TRICK NOT ENOUGH AS BROWN TAKES 2012 OCEAN STATE CUP

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Senior captain Mary Green (Merrick, N.Y.) scored her second hat trick in as many games, but it wasn't enough to keep Brown from winning the 2012 Ocean State Cup with a 17-7 victory over the Bryant University women's lacrosse team Tuesday night at the Track & Turf Complex.

The Bears (4-3) never trailed in the contest, opening the game with three quick goals to put the host Bulldogs (1-6) in an early hole. But Bryant responded, closing the gap to 3-2 off unassisted tallies from top scorers Lauren Sheridan (Bethpage, N.Y.) and Haley Bloom (Hauppauge, N.Y.) less than six minutes into the game.

From there, though, Brown opened up an 8-2 lead, scoring five-straight goals from five different players to bring the clock down to 12:41 before Green got on the board for the first time at 12:17 with a free position goal.

The Bears would get three more tallies -- from Danielle Mastro, Alexandra Crerend, her second of the day, and Julia Keller -- for an 11-3 margin. Sophomore Kimberley Sniffen (Redding, Conn.) got in on the scoring for the final goal of the frame, her third on the year, with 47 seconds before the break with a quick backhanded shot off a pass from Bloom to take an 11-4 deficit into the locker room.

Out of the break, though, Brown raced out to a 14-4 advantage in the opening 5:30, and the Bears never looked back despite a pair of goals by Green and a second from Sheridan, assisted by Skylar Zlotnick (Essex Fells, N.J.) for the rookie's first-career point.

Kaela McGilloway paced the game with an impressive seven points off four goals and three assists and led 11 different Brown goal scorers. The Bears outshot their hosts, 36-16, while Bulldog netminder and reigning Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week Lauren Filippone (West Babylon, N.Y.) turned away 14 -- including 11 in the first half -- despite the loss.

The Brown goaltending tandem of Kellie Roddy and Isabel Harvey combined for six saves in the outing with Roddy earning her first win of the year between the pipes. The Bulldogs edged out the Bears in ground balls, 19-18, and were led by five from Filippone.

The visitors dominated the game's draw controls, winning 18 of 26 on the night, paced by seven from Grace Healy. Sophomore Lisa Vendel (Sandy Hook, Conn.) tied the game high with three caused turnovers.

The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, March 27 when they host UC Davis at the Bryant Turf Complex at 4 p.m.
