Dawgs demonstrate major improvements with victories at Novak Memorial Regatta

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Bryant University women's rowing team took home two victories and two top-3 finishes at the Novak Memorial Regatta on Saturday.

The Black and Gold competed against Iona, Fordham, Fairfield, West Point, Stony Brook, and Manhattan at the regatta.

How It Happened

The Bulldogs opened the day with a victory in heat 1 of the Varsity 4+ race to advance to the finals later in the afternoon.The squad of Gabriella Martino (coxswain), Bridget Moore (stroke seat), Megan Hart (3 seat), Sunny Kuechle (2 seat), and Sarah Oakes (bow seat) with the fastest time of the preliminary races at 8:41.60. The V4+ team then went on to earn first place in the finals with a time of 9:10.

The Novice 4+ team also went home with a victory as they raced to a time of 9:42.10 to take down Iona and Manhattan.The boat of Brooke Hammond (coxswain), Sarah Bullock (stroke seat), Calla Puccetti (3 seat), Monica Garbacz (2 seat), and Addison Morin (bow seat) beat out second place Iona by nearly 55 seconds and 2:25 faster than third place Manhattan.

The V8+ team took third place in their race with a time of 8:05.97. Bryant was just over 22 seconds off first place Fordham. The V8+ team consisted of Martino at coxswain, Kuechle in the stroke seat, Hart in the 7 seat, Moore in the 6 seat, Olivia Manuel in the 5 seat, Bullock in the 4 seat, Puccetti in the 3 seat, Erin Prouty in the 2 seat, and Oakes in the bow seat.

The JV8+ also placed third in their race just behind Fordham and Fairfield at 9:03.28. The squad of Hammond (coxswain), Prouty (stroke seat), Aine McIntyre (7 seat), Jordan Grady (6 seat), Manuel (5 seat), Garbacz (4 seat), Lauren Barry (3 seat), Kristia King (2 seat), and Morin (bow seat) raced the JV8+ for the Bulldogs.

Sicilia Prestifilippo was set to compete in the Women's 1x event but the race was ultimately cancelled due to strong headwinds and poor conditions.

Notes and Notables

  • Last year at the Novak Memorial Regatta the Black and Gold placed 5th in the V8+. The team had nearly a 55 second improvement in this year's race.
  • Bryant also demonstrated major improvements in the 4+ races. The Bulldog V4+ team did not make it out of qualifying last year and was roughly 56 seconds behind first place Fordham in 2023. The N4+ team placed second last year and had the fourth fastest time overall in 2023.
  • This is the first time in program history that the Black and Gold have entered both a V8 and a JV8 team in this regatta.
  • The Bulldogs left New York with two wins and two third palace finishes while only being approximately a third of the size of other competing programs.
