Women's Soccer Season Ends with 2-0 Loss to Saint Rose in NCAA Tournament

NCAA Div. II Tournament First Round                          #23 BRYANT 0 vs. #15 Saint Rose 2

November 3, 2006

RINDGE, N.H. - The Bryant Women's Soccer team, seeded third in the New England region and 23rd in the nation, saw its season come to an end as they lost to second-ranked Saint Rose in the first round of the New England Region in the Div. II NCAA Tournament 2-0 at Sodexho Field at Franklin Pierce College.

The Golden Knights got on the board in the 15th minute as Ashley McGuire got behind the Bulldog defense and buried a shot past Bryant goaltender Katie Mitchell (Deer Park, N.Y.). Lindsay Bove notched the assist on McGuire's 11th tally of the season.

Bryant had its best chance in the 78th minute as Holly Tyser (Somers, Conn.) rang a shot from 25-yards out of the cross bar, and Tricia Spada's (Dedham, Mass.) rebound was blocked.

The Golden Knights answered right back as Bove put home a Kylee Litchfield crossing pass just three minutes later to give Saint Rose the insurance goal they desperately needed.

Making her third straight start in goal, the freshman Mitchell robbed Sami Brown from just five feet out in the seventh minute with a big save as she dove to her right to get apiece of the ball.

Mitchell came up huge again in the 35th minute, keeping the match at the time a one-goal affair, making a sliding save off a Deanne Wachtel header.

Spada had a free kick from just outside the box in the 25th minute, but her shot was blocked the Golden Knights' wall.

Saint Rose outshot the Bulldogs 9-2. Mitchell made five saves, keeping the Bulldogs in the game throughout the match.

Bryant finishes its season 15-7-1 while Saint Rose improves to 17-2-1. The 15 wins are the most in Bryant school history.

The loss ends the career of senior captain Casey Grange (Methuen, Mass.) who is the Bulldogs all-time leading goal scorer and the first player in school history to record 100 points in a career. Grange finishes this season with 19 goals and eight assists.

Bryant was without injured goaltender Jessica Neales (Swansea, Mass.) and second leading-scorer Diane Pascale (Plymouth, Mass.).

The Golden Knights will advance to Sunday's New England Region final at 1 p.m. at Sodexho Field.
