BULLDOGS SHUT OUT BY CENTRAL CONNECTICUT, 2-0, IN FIRST NEC GAME OF THE SEASON

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant University women's soccer team lost its first NEC matchup of the 2009 campaign, 2-0, to Central Connecticut State (CCSU) on Friday night at the Bryant Turf Complex.

The Bulldogs drop to 2-6 on the season with the loss while the Blue Devils improve to 4-5-1. Bryant had plenty of chances but just could not manage to find the net. However, they did manage to outshoot their opponent 13-12. The first chance for the Bulldogs came just nine minutes into the game when senior Holly Tyser (Somers, Conn.) found herself one-on-one with the Blue Devils' keeper. Tyser was able to beat the keeper but unfortunately the ball rolled just past the right post.

Senior Katie Mitchell (Deer Park, N.Y.) recorded four saves in the contest, the first coming in the 35th minute.  Brittany Jackson of CCSU sent a nice through-ball to Beth Lloyd who attempted a shot at the left side of the net but a diving Mitchell denied the attempt. Just one minute later Lloyd struck again and this time made it count. She took a pass from Karise Hilt well outside the box and was able to send a deep shot over the head of the Bulldog keeper and into the right side netting for the match's first goal.

Just moments before the end of the first half the Bulldogs were able to get a flurry of shots on Blue Devil keeper Caity Casey. Tyser sent a nice pass to team leading scorer Morgan Derick (Ashland, Mass.) who struck the ball well but had it deflected by a CCSU defender. Following the Derick strike, freshman Carolyn Giuliano (Wethersfield, Conn.) sent a ball flying just over the top of the net as time expired in the first half with the score at 1-0.

Early in the second half, Mitchell showed off her goal-saving abilities once again with a fully laid-out dive and punch of the ball over the Bulldog net coming from a Brittany Emin shot. Emin would get her chance again in the 86th minute when she received a pass from Ciara Crinion which put her in a wide open breakaway with just Mitchell to beat. Emin was able to beat the senior to the right side of the net for the final goal of the game, bringing the score to 2-0.

The Bulldogs continue their Northeast Conference schedule when they travel to Hamden, Conn. to face Quinnipiac on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.  The squad returns home on Friday, Oct. 9 when they host Monmouth at 7 p.m. at the Bryant Turf Complex.
