SMITHFIELD, R.I. - In its first season eligible for awards and honors, Bryant University sophomore Mary Green (Merrick, N.Y.) made history as she is the first-ever women's soccer player to earn postseason Northeast Conference (NEC) accolades. On Thursday evening, she was named to the second team all-NEC for her defensive efforts as voted on by conference coaches.

The Long Island native started 18 games this season, tallying one goal and one assist for a total of three points in the Bulldogs second season at the Division I level. Bryant finished the season with an overall record of 4-13-2 and 2-6-2 against NEC opponents.

Green took 21 total shots, placing eight on net from the back line. The sophomore recorded her first career goal at Saint Francis (Pa.) on October 23. Just three games later, Green was able to notch her first career assist on a cross to Bryant senior Holly Tyser (Somers,Conn.) Green helped the Bulldogs battle in seven overtime matches this season, five of which went into the second stage.

She has played in 35 total games in her soccer career, making 34 starts. She has been a standout defender on the soccer field since arriving on the Bryant campus.

Green is also a member of the Bryant women's lacrosse team. As a freshman, she started 15 of 16 games and finished third on the team with 38 points. The midfielder scored 29 goals and registered nine assists. Last season, Green picked up 22 ground balls and was second on the team with 31 draw controls.

Central Connecticut's Leah Blayney and head coach Mick D'Arcy were named player and coach of the year, respectively. The Northeast Conference tournament gets underway Friday, Nov. 6 on the campus of CCSU in New Britain, Conn. The top-seed host squares off with defending conference champion Long Island University at 11 a.m. followed by No. 2 Monmouth taking on No. 3 Quinnipiac.
