WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO MAINE 1-0 IN OVERTIME

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - After a 37-minute lightning delay, which occurred just 10 minutes into the game, the Bryant University women's soccer team lost to the University of Maine 1-0 in overtime at the Bryant Turf Complex tonight.

Underneath both lights and rain the Bulldogs (1-3) fought hard but came up just a little short against the Black Bears (2-2-1). The game-winning tally was scored in the 100th minute of play by senior Laura Martel. Martel found herself on a breakaway with only Bryant goalie Katie Mitchell (Deer Park, N.Y.) to beat in the first period of overtime. Martel was able to chip the ball just out of Mitchell's reach and tuck the ball into the right side of the goal for the game-winner.

The best attempt for the Bulldogs came in the middle of the second half when Kaitlyn Hinck (Bow, N.H.) sent a cross into senior captain Alex DiPippo (Shelton, Conn.). DiPippo was able to get her right foot on the ball for a one-time volley but hit it directly at the goalie protecting the near post. The captain took a team-high three shots. The Bulldogs registered seven shots, including six in the second half. Bryant senior keeper Mitchell had three saves in the contest.

The Bulldogs return to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 15 when they travel to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Fairfield University at 7 p.m.
