WOMEN'S SOCCER CAPTURES FIRST WIN WITH 2-1 OVERTIME VICTORY AT NJIT

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – In her third game as a member of the Bryant University women's soccer team, freshman Ari Goldberg (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal early in the first overtime period to lift the Bulldogs past the New Jersey Institute of Technology, 2-1 Friday night.

This was the first win of the season for Bryant, which opened with a pair of home losses, while the Highlanders dipped to 1-2 overall.

The Bulldogs were the first to jump on the board as junior forward Kaitlyn Hinck (Bow, N.H.) sprinted to receive a cross from Katy MacAndrew (Coventry, R.I.) and slipped it past NJIT keeper Sadie Mele in the 38th minute.

The 1-0 Bulldog lead held up for most of the contest until senior Michelle Borth launched a shot from 15-feet out at the top of the box and out of the reach of Bryant keeper Kelsi Jacob (Mahwah, N.J.) in the 79th minute of the game.

Following the remaining 11 minutes of regulation and only 70 seconds into the first overtime stanza, Goldberg dribbled alone from midfield to about 25 feet out and lifted the ball over the head of Mele for the unassisted winner.

For the game, Bryant held the edge in shots taken by a margin of 16-11 while NJIT took eight corners kicks compared to five for the visitors. Jacob recorded four saves for the Bulldogs while Mele stopped seven for the Highlanders. Bryant junior Amanda Worrall (Hamilton Square, N.J.) led the game with five shots, including two on goal but was unable to register a tally.

The Bulldogs return to action at St. Peter's on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
