BRYANT WOMEN'S SOCCER CLIPPED BY ALBANY, 2-0

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite taking seven shots in the second half, the Bryant University women's soccer team could not climb back from an early deficit, falling to the University at Albany, 2-0 at Bulldog Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

The Great Danes (5-5) took the early advantage on a goal scored by Chelsea DeVerna in the 4th minute of the game. Junior Kendra Harrell-Vigil crossed the ball from the right flank just in front of the Bulldog net to DeVerna who was able to settle the bounce and chip it past Bryant keeper Kelsi Jacob (Mahwah, N.J.).

The Bulldogs (2-6-1) returned four minutes later with a great opportunity as sophomore Kaitlyn Fare (Milstone Township, N.J.) received a long cross from Steph Del Mistro (East Williston, N.Y.) but her timely header went right into the arms of Albany keeper Breanna Maggio.

The Great Danes would go on to generate seven shots in the first half but the strong Bulldog backline made sure that there were no easy scoring chances as Bryant entered intermission down one goal.

Bryant opened the second half with a pair of quick shots by Sarah Donovan (Storrs, Conn.) and Carolyn Giuliano (Wethersfield, Conn.) but both were just high over the top of the Albany goal. The series was followed shortly by a well-placed corner kick from Alex Bengston (Andover, Mass.) that was kicked out by an array of Albany defenders.

The Great Danes tacked on their second tally of the contest on a goal scored by Aubrey VanGorder in the 67th minute. Jacob came out of the Bulldog goal to take on the charge of VanGorder but lost the one-on-one battle as the forward floated the ball into the open net.

The Bulldogs enjoyed a couple of quality shots to end regulation, including a high arching strike by Elizabeth Guimond (Claremont, N.H.) that dipped just past the Albany crossbar, but they could not put one past Maggio.

Jacob recorded two saves for the Bulldogs while Maggio had five for the Great Danes. In the game, Albany outshot Bryant by a margin of 11-8.

The Bulldogs return to action on Sept. 24 when they visit Manhattan at 7:00 p.m.
