Bryant heads to Maine to open season

The Bulldogs look to start 2012 off on the right foot

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The Bryant University women's soccer team will head to Orono, Maine to open up the regular season against the University of Maine on Friday, Aug. 17 (4 p.m.).

The Bulldogs (0-0) will look to begin 2012 on a winning note as they embark on their first season of full Division I eligibility. Friday will mark the official start of the regular season for Black Bears (0-0) as well, as both teams vie for opening day victories.

The two teams last met on September 11, 2009 at Bryant on a rainy Smithfield afternoon. The Black Bears edged out the Bulldogs, 1-0, in an overtime thriller that featured shots from current Bryant senior captains Alex Bengston (Andover, Mass.) and Kaitlyn Fare (Millstone Township, N.J.).

Maine returns a solid contingent of its starting midfield and defense from 2011, including four-year starting goalkeeper Meagan Price-Leibenzeder.

Last season, the Black Bears went 5-9-1 (2-6 in conference), finishing in eighth place in the America East. The Bulldogs, predicted to finish seventh in 2011, exceeded expectations, culminating their final year of Division I reclassification with a sixth place Northeast Conference finish.

Both the Bulldogs and the Black Bears are tabbed to finish seventh in their respective leagues based on the conference preseason polls released Monday. A strong start on Friday is vital to both squads as they look to get back to the postseason.
