Bulldogs fall to Air Force, 1-0

DESPITE OUTSHOOTING THEIR OPPONENT, WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO AIR FORCE

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's soccer dropped its final game of its Colorado road trip to Air Force, 1-0, Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs were held scoreless for the second straight game despite outshooting the Falcons, 15-14.

In the 39th minute, McKenna Fox put away the only goal of the contest off a deflection from five yards out off a Felicia Sturgeon shot attempt.

Less than two minutes later, the Bulldogs were wistled for a handball inside the box that nullified what would have been a game-tying goal.

"The yellow card was a huge momentum blow," said Bryant head coach Chris Flint. "Especially since the goal we allowed was so frustrating, it would have been huge to equalize right away."

Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the match, however Bryant had its chances throughout the game. The best opportunity came with seven minutes left in the contest when freshman Rachael Ivanicki (Colts Neck, N.J.) beat Air Force keeper Kelly Stambaugh and fired a shot that just nicked the far post. Jessica MacAndrew (Coventry, R.I.) and Shana Follette (Plymouth, Mass.) each had two shots on goal in the game as well.

"We played very well in the second half and we had our opportunities," added Flint. "We just had a lapse of about 20 minutes at the end of the first half and they were able to take advantage."

Bryant goalkeeper Lauren Viverito (Dayton, N.J.) recorded four saves in the match while Stambaugh stopped seven shots to earn her fourth win of 2012.

"We need to build off of the second half of this game," said Flint. "And to do so, we need to become more consistent for an entire 90 minutes."

The Bulldogs will look to get back in the win column when they return home for a showdown with Delaware St. in Smithfield on Friday at 3 p.m.
