Bulldogs fall to Monmouth, 1-0

WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS ON THE ROAD AT MONMOUTH, 1-0

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's soccer team fell to Monmouth Sunday afternoon in a hard fought, 1-0, match.

After earning their first Northeast Conference victory on Friday night, the Bulldogs (1-1) were held scoreless on Sunday by a very talented Monmouth team. With the win, the Hawks (5-4-1) improve to 2-0 in NEC play this season.

The Hawks outshot the Bulldogs 17-4, and were able to limit Bryant's offensive attack, however, despite a noticeable discrepancy between the two teams in shot attempts, both squads played even for the first 72 minutes of the match.

The lone goal came in the 73rd minute from 27 yards out off a rocket from Monmouth's Brianne Boyle. The Bulldogs turned the ball over in their defensive third and the Hawks were able to capitalize, recording the only score of the game.

"It was a hard fought battle on both ends," said Bryant head coach Chris Flint. "We just weren't able to create enough scoring chances and that turned out to be the difference."

Freshman Quinn Massaroni (Albany, N.Y.) registered two of Bryant's four shots, while Alex Bengston (Andover, Mass.) and Shana Follette (Plymouth, Mass.) each recorded a shot apiece.

Bryant goalkeeper Lauren Viverito (Dayton, N.J.) stopped three Monmouth chances in her ninth start of the season. Viverito has played all but 45 minutes in goal this year for the Bulldogs.

"Road games are always tough," added Flint. "And even though it would have been great to pick up some points today, we will take the split."

The Black and Gold will have an opportunity to get back in the win column on Friday, continuing NEC play, when they host Saint Francis (PA) at 3:00 p.m.
