Bulldogs fall at Rugters Friday night

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's soccer team ran into a tough Rutgers team Friday evening in New Jersey as the Scarlet Knights earned a 4-0 victory over the Bulldogs.

Paced by three first-half scores, Rutgers (5-1-1) cruised to a convincing shutout to earn its fifth W of the 2013 season, snapping Bryant's (3-4) three-game win streak.

The Scarlet Knight attack struck early and often as Jonelle Filigno put the home team up, 1-0, in the 29th minute. Not to be outdone by Filigno, Rachel Cole doubled the lead with a score of her own in the 39th minute, before Stefanie Scholz capped off the first half with a tally just before halftime.

Madison Tiernan put home the fourth and final score of the evening for the Scarlet Knights, as a combination of Jessica Janosz and Alana Jimenez kept Bryant scoreless through all 90 minutes. Bulldog goalkeepers Lauren Viverito (Dayton, N.J.) and Kaylan Conrad (Avon, Conn.) combined for eight saves, including a career-high five stops for Conrad in the second period.

Sophomore forward Scout Benson (Lynnfield, Mass.) led the Black and Gold with two shots, including one on-goal, while Shana Follette (Plymouth, Mass.), Allison DeBenedictis (Norwell, Mass.) and Ari Goldberg (East Bridgewater, Mass.) each got off a shot on net.

Looking forward, Bulldogs will have a week to regroup as they get set to host New Hampshire on Friday, Sept. 20 in Smithfield. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
