Bulldogs fall at UVM, 2-1, Sunday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite outshooting its opponents by a considerable margin, 19-14, the Bryant University women's soccer team fell to Vermont, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Virtue Field in Burlington, Vt.

The Bulldogs, who earned a huge 2-0 shutout over New Hampshire on Friday, were unable to keep the momentum rolling as the fall to 4-5 on the year with the loss.

Vermont struck first in the 12th minute when Alex Jankins finished a one-timer in front of the net off a cross from Alexandra Dezenzo to put the Catamounts up early, 1-0. Nearly 30 minutes later, the Bulldogs knotted the score on a rocket from senior Ari Goldberg (East Bridgewater, Mass.), off an assist from sophomore Allison DeBenedictis (Norwell, Mass.).

With a halftime tie essentially imminent, UVM's Nikki McFarland recovered a Bryant turnover and was able to find the back of the net with just over two minutes to play until the break.

The Black and Gold fired a total of 13 shots in the final 45 minutes of play but could not net the equalizer as Vermont's Ally Ramos made a whopping 11 saves in her third win of the season. Senior goalkepper Lauren Viverito (Dayton, N.J.) made six stops herself in her first start of the year.

With Northeast Conference play exactly two weeks away, Bryant will have two matches in the next 13 days before hosting Sacred Heart on Sunday, Oct. 6.
