Bulldogs drop heartbreaker at UMass, 1-0, Wed.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After playing nearly even for the first 81 minutes of the match, the Bryant University women's soccer team fell to Massachusetts, 1-0, Thursday afternoon in Amherst, Mass.

UMass's Jackie Bruno placed a beautiful cross from along the left sideline to the far post of the net just in time to meet a streaking Sarah Pandolfi for the freshman's second score and second game-winner of the 2013 season.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 4-6 on the season, while the Minutewomen close out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 4-5-1 overall mark.

Freshman goalkeeper Kaylan Conrad (Avon, Conn.) made a career-high seven saves, allowing just a single goal in her eighth start of her rookie campaign. Seniors Shana Follette (Plymouth, Mass.) and Ari Goldberg (East Bridgewater, Mass.) each fired a pair of shots on goal but the Bulldogs were unable to find the back of the net for the fourth time this season.

Sophomore defender Sarah Schucker (Nanuet, N.Y.) also fired a pair of blasts, to go along with shots from midfielders Katy Biagi (Natick, Mass) and Quinn Massaroni (Albany, N.Y.). Overall, the Minutewomen outshot Bryant, 19-8, on the game, but the Bulldogs did earn five corner kick attempts compared to UMass's four.

The Bulldogs will take the next six days to regroup before heading down the street to Providence, R.I., where they will wrap-up non-conference action at Brown on Wednesday. Bryant opens Northeast Conference play with the Pennsylvania road trip, facing off with Robert Morris on Friday, Oct. 11 before heading to Saint Francis U. the following Sunday.
