Manna, Bulldogs fend off Stony Brook 1-0

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Remi Manna (Pleasantville, N.Y.) recorded her second game-winning goal in as many appearances vs. Stony Brook, and the defense held strong in the final 15 minutes as the Bryant University women's soccer team walked away with a 1-0 win over the Seawolves on a rainy Sunday afternoon at the Bulldog Soccer Field.

Bryant 1, Stony Brook 0

Records: Bryant 3-1-1, Stony Brook 2-4-0

Coach Bigg's Comments

"I think Remi did a good job of keeping the first ball up and then found some space to run off and get herself free. I thought she had a good game today. It was a good performance in terms of the way we passed the ball … It was another really good performance defensively. I think the team did really well. The forwards worked hard in defense, the midfielders and back line were really solid again. They did a really good job of closing things down in our penalty area and clearing balls away and made it very tough for Stony Brook to find a tying goal."

Key Moment

  • With just under 19 minutes gone, junior Alison Guilmette (Coventry, R.I.) played a ball down the left flank to Manna who charged towards the end line at the left edge of the box and fired what looked to be a dangerous cross, but flew over the Stony Brook keeper's outstretched arm and into the side netting for the game's winning goal.

Scoring Summary

  • 19th minute – Bryant 1, Stony Brook 0 – Guilmette used her vision to play the ball through to Manna on the left side and the sophomore took advantage of the space given to fire a ball into the net from an awkward angle.

Stats/Notes

  • Manna scored the game-winning goal against Stony Brook last season in the 109th minute on a chip of the keeper from 12 yards out.
  • Bulldogs keepers Rachel Brightman (Rochester, N.Y.) and Meghan Dalton (West Hartford, Conn.) combined for six saves in their third combined clean sheet of the season.
  • Dalton came up with a big save late, as a cross to the back post connected but the freshman was there to close down the angle and make the stop.
  • The Bulldogs were able to win despite only recording three shots in the game.
  • Bryant was able to stifle Stony Brook's onslaught of shots in the final 15:14 in which the Seawolves fired five shots towards the net.
  • Guilmette has already matched her career-high in assists with two on the season, with 12 games still to go.
