BRYANT SWIMMING WINS SEASON OPENER OVER ROGER WILLIAMS
SMITHFIELD, RI - The Bryant University men's and women's swim teams both captured their first wins of the 2007-08 season with victories over Roger Williams University in the season opener at home Saturday morning. The women posted a 116-78 win while the men toppled the Hawks, 115-89.
The women were led by freshman Jill Squillante (Sayville, NY) who took first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26:69 and the 200-yard backstroke with a 2:19.43 mark. Squillante also led off Bryant's winning 400-yard medley relay.
Other multi-event winners for the women were freshman Jill Hira, who won the 100-yard freestyle (57.46) and the 1000-yard freestyle (11:29.64), and freshman Amy Howell with wins in the 200-yard fly (2:19.08) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.20).
For the men's side, freshman Steven Nyugen (San Jose, Calif.) swam to first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.22 and the 500-yard freestyle at a 5:03.58 mark. Nyugen was also a member of the winning 400-yard medley relay.
Getting multi-event wins of their own on the men's side were freshman Mike Gilligan, who won the 50-yard and 100-yard free (22.77; 50.20) and junior Tom Ferrigno, with victories in the 200-yard IM (2:03.21) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.85). Both were teammates of Nyugen in the 400-yard medley relay win.
Bryant starts the season off 1-0 with Saturday's win while Roger Williams falls to 0-2 on the season.
The Bulldogs will next compete at the Bentley Invitational Sunday morning.
