BULLDOGS PERFORM WELL AGAINST EAGLES IN SEASON-OPENER

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Highlighted by a clean sweep of every swimming event and the debut of a male diver, the Bryant University men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened the 2012-13 season at Boston College on Friday, Oct. 12.

After defeating the Eagles for the first time in school history last season, the women repeated the feat on Friday as they dominated in winning every swimming event. Included in that was a pair of school records and a trio of first-place finishes on the men's side.

In a stunning display of dominance, the Bryant women claimed every event including both relays. Senior Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.) won all three of her events and freshman Jamie Schaefer (Durham, N.C.) set a school record in the 200 fly with a time of 2:10.76 in her first collegiate race. The time was over a second faster than the previous record set during the 2011 ECAC Championships. Ostrander started her season strong, claiming the 50 free, 100 back and 200 back events.

The Bulldogs also got first-place finishes from freshman Lauren Doerrman (Oley, Pa.), Taylor DeBever (Denver, Colo.), Julia Messina (Canadaigua, N.Y.), Molly Smith (Belmont, Mass.) and Dana Yu (Bridgewater, N.J.). Doerrman won the 1000 free, DeBever claimed the 100, 200 and 500 free, Messina won the 100 breast, Smith claimed the 200 breast and 200 IM and Yu won the 100 fly in her first collegiate race.

On the men's side, Conor Makepeace (Wallingford, Conn.) made history by becoming the first male diver in school history. Makepeace competed in both the 1m and 3m dive, finishing second in both events. He totaled 244.80 points in the 1 meter and 224.10 points in the 3 meter. The men also received first-place finishes from Graham Beck (Danvers, Mass.) and Joshua Bjornberg (Wallingford, Conn.). Beck claimed the 200 breast with a time of 2:11.27 and Bjornberg won the 100 fly with a time of 53.44 in his first-career meet. They also won the 200 medley relay. Alex Kosenski (Lavallette, N.J.), Kevin Hong (Bridgewater, N.J.), Beck and Nicholas Karadimas (New Milford, Conn.) combined to win the event with a time of 1:36.30.

The Bulldogs will now prepare for their next meets as the women welcome NEC rival Wagner on Oct. 20. The men travel to Providence on Oct. 26.
