Bulldogs cruise past Holy Cross

BULLDOGS CRUISE IN FINAL DUAL MEET OF SEASON

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Freshmen Dana Yu (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Elisabeth Schauer (Pelham, N.Y.) each won two events and the Bryant University women's swimming and diving team set two pool records on its way to a commanding 199-95 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday (Feb. 2).

The Bulldogs (8-4) won every swimming event against the Crusaders in one of their final tune-ups for the Northeast Conference championships at the end of the month.

Bryant's freshman class shined on Saturday, picking up six victories on the afternoon. Yu won the 100 fly (59.56) and the 50 fly (26.55). Schauer won the 100 back (1:02.45) and the 200 free (2:00.11), and Julia Messina (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and Maria Messina (Canandaigua, N.Y.) added victories in the 100 breast (1:09.05) and 500 free (5:27.61), respectively.

The Black and Gold also received strong meets from their upperclassmen. Senior Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.) won 200 IM (2:15.09), 50 back (28.20) and the 50 free (24.93). Bryant also received victories from junior Taylor DeBever (Denver, Colo.) in the 100 free (53.61), senior Kim Carballeira (East Setauket, N.Y.) in the 1000 free (11:15.24) and sophomore Samantha Hilton (Fairfield, Conn.) in the 50 breast (32.57). The Bulldogs also set a pool record in the 400 medley relay as the team of Ostrander, J. Messina, Yu and DeBever touched the wall in a time of 4:01.78. Ostrander's 100 back split of 58.45 in the 400 medley relay set a pool record.

The Bulldogs return to the pool on Feb. 16 when they compete in the UConn Invitational.
