Bulldogs finish up at UConn Invite

OSTRANDER AND SCHAEFER SHINE IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON MEET

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Led by a pair of first-place finishes from senior Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.) and a strong performance from freshman Jamie Schaefer (Durham, N.C.), the Bryant University women's swimming and diving team wrapped up its regular season on Saturday (Feb. 16) at the UConn Invitational.

Swimming in their final meet before the Northeast Conference Championships, the Bulldogs competed against UConn, Central Connecticut, Providence, Boston College, Rhode Island, Assumption and Keene St.

Preparing to defend her three-time swimmer of the year honors, Ostrander won the 50 and 100 free. She won the 50 with a time of 23.89 and then touched the wall in 52.33 seconds to win the 100. Continuing a strong freshman season, Schaefer won the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.11 and finished fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 59.91. Bryant also received a first-place finish from senior Molly Smith (Belmont, Mass.) in the 400 IM (4:49.84).

The Bulldogs also received strong finishes from several other swimmers. Freshman Kristie Chan (San Francisco, Calif.) finished sixth in the 200 free (2:00.96), seventh in the 100 free (55.58) and eighth in the 50 free (25.26). Kaitlin Buckley (Duxbury, Mass.) finished third in the 200 free (1:59.07).

Bryant will now have a week and a half to get ready for the 2013 NEC Championships that begin on Wednesday, Feb. 26. The championship meet runs through Saturday, Feb. 29 and will once again be held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Mass.
