BULLDOGS SET TWO SCHOOL RECORDS ON FIRST DAY OF NECs

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The first night of the 2013 Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships was a successful one for the Bryant University women's swimming and diving team as it set two school records in the opening relays.

The Bulldogs finished second in the 200 medley relay and then finished fourth in the 800 free relay to finish day one with 64 points. Saint Francis U. leads after day one with 74 points and Central Connecticut is a close second with 70 points as they split the opening two relays. Bryant and Wagner are both tied with 64 points and Mount St. Mary's (56), Sacred Heart (52) and St. Francis Brooklyn (48) round out the standings.

In the first relay of the night – the 200 medley relay – the quartet of Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.), Julia Messina (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Dana Yu (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Taylor DeBever (Denver, Colo.) shattered the previous school record of 1:54.14 with a time of 1:43.78. Kaitlin Buckley (Duxbury, Mass.), Caitlin Hanahoe (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Elizabeth Schauer (Pelham, N.Y.) and Mara Valenzuela (Bridgewater, N.J.) then combined to set a school record in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:37.46. The previous record was set at last year's NEC championships.

The championship meet continues on Thursday with a full slate of events beginning at 11:00 a.m. with preliminary heats. Finals will begin at 7:00 p.m.
