Bulldogs in 2nd after day three of NECs

WSWM IN SECOND HEADING INTO FINAL DAY OF NECs

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Taylor DeBever (Denver, Colo.) won the 200 free for the second time in her career and the Bryant University women's swimming and diving team set five more school records on day three of the 2013 Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.

Thanks to a fantastic team performance on Friday, the Bulldogs have moved into second place with 456.5 points. They are within striking distance of leader Saint Francis U. (477.5) heading into the final day of competition on Saturday. Wagner (441), Central Connecticut (415), Mount St. Mary's (202), Sacred Heart (126) and St. Francis Brooklyn (115) are 3-7 and round out the scoring.

The 200 free champion as a freshman, DeBever reclaimed the gold medal in the event by breaking her own school record with a time of 1:49.10. Several other swimmers also medaled for the Bulldogs on day three including senior Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.), freshman Lauren Doerrman (Oley, Pa.), freshman Jamie Schaefer (Durham, N.C.), sophomore Alexandra Morreale (Short Hills, N.J.) and freshman Elizabeth Schauer (Pelham, N.Y.). Ostrander lost the first race of her career, finishing second in the 100 back with a time of 56.16, and Schauer finished in a tie for third with a time of 56.83. Doerrman finished second in the 400 IM with a school-record time of 4:24.53, Schaefer was third in the 100 fly with a school-record time of 56.33 and Morreale was third in the 100 breast with a school-record time of 1:04.84.

Other finalists on Friday included Molly Smith (Belmont, Mass.), Kaitlin Buckley (Duxbury, Mass.), Dana Yu (Bridgewater, N.J.), Kristie Chan (San Francisco, Calif.), Maria Messina (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Mara Valenzuela (Bridgewater, N.J.), Caitlin Hanahoe (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Brianne Dwyer (Hicksville, N.Y.), Julia Messina (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Samantha Hilton (Fairfield, Conn.) and Ashley Atherton (Bridgewater, N.J.). Smith was fifth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:31.95. In the 100 fly, Buckley was eighth (59.45), Yu was ninth (57.25) and Chan was 16th (1:00.95). In the 200 free, Messina was 10th (1:54.26), Valenzuela was 11th (1:54.69), Hanahoe was 12th (1:54.75) and Schauer was 16th (1:57.62). In the 100 breast, Dwyer was fifth (1:05.39), Messina was sixth (1:05.90), Hilton was 11th (1:08.37) and Atherton was 14th (1:09.33).

Bryant closed the night with a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of Ostrander, Morreale, Schaefer and DeBever shattered the previous school record by over 20 seconds with a time of 3:49.09.

The championship meet concludes on Saturday with preliminary heats beginning at 11:00 a.m. and finals beginning at 7:00 p.m.
