Burdick, Rice shine on day two of WPI Invitational

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University women's swimming and diving  sophomore Ann Burdick (Glenmont, N.Y.) won the 3-meter dive and classmate Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) posted a victory in the 50 free to highlight day two of the WPI Gompei Invitational.

The Bulldogs are currently in fourth place with 2,297.5 points. WPI leads the 13-team field with 3,040 points.

Burdick, along with Stephanie Jennings (Elmont, N.Y.), went 1-2 in the 3-meter dive. Burdick set a new personal best in the finals with a score of 430.65. Jennings finished second with a score of 391.25.

Rice paced the Bulldogs in the pool by winning the 50 free. She posted a time of 24.35. Freshman Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain) tied for first place in the 200 back, posting a time of 2:06.85. Scifo also finished 10th in the 200 IM.

Other top performers for the Bulldogs included Nicole Salzano (Elmwood Park, N.J.), Erin Daly (Reading, Mass.), Mackenzie Kirk (San Jose, Calif.), Lindsey Choate (Upper St. Clair, Pa.), Eliza Brant (Hauppauge, N.Y.), Samantha Torrez (Whittier, Calif.), Domenica Alcala (Cancun, Mexico) and Taylor Poliseno (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.).

Salzano finished seventh in the 200 back and 6th in the 500 free, Daly finished seventh in the 500 free, Kirk finished 10th in the 500 free, Choate won the "B" final of the 50 free, Brant finished fifth in the 100 breast, while Torrez, Alcala and Poliseno finished 2,4,8 in the 100 fly.

Bryant also won the 200 free relay and finished second in the 400 medley relay. Kayleigh Canavan (Cumberland, R.I.), Salzano, Poliseno and Rice combined to post a winning time of 1:37.54 in the 200 free relay. Salzano, Brant, Torrez and Rice teamed up to finish second in the 400 medley relay.
