Bryant falls at Boston College to open season

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's swimming and diving team dropped its season-opener on Friday night, ending up on the short end of the score against Boston College.

Key Moment

The Eagles went 1-2 in two of the meet's first three events to establish some early separation, including a sweep of the 200 free that helped them on their way to the win.

How the Swimmers Fared

  • Junior Alyssa DiFiore (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished with a team-high 18 points on the evening, including a win in both the 500 free (5:16.30) and 1000 free (10:51.73). She was also part of the second-place 400 free relay team.
  • Three different swimmers finished with eight points, which was good for second on the team. Senior Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.), junior Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain) and sophomore Elin Svard (Falun, Dalarna, Sweden) all compiled that total.
  • Rice finished second in the 100 free (53.40), Scifo finished second in both the 100 back (58.31) and 200 back (2:08.26) and Svard finished third in the 100 fly (58.48) and 200 individual medley (2:12.93).
  • Sophomore Heather Wong (Ramsey, N.J.) finished second in the 200 breast (2:27.79) and third in the 100 breast (1:07.80).

Coach LoCurto's Comments

"I was pretty happy with our performance tonight. They were all at just about their season individual averages. It was great to see Kelci [Abernethy] finish second in the 1-meter after a one-year layoff."

How the Divers Fared

  • Senior Kelci Abernethy (Chandler, Ariz.) finished second in both the 1-meter (234.66) and 3-meter (238.34) boards.
  • Sophomore Gabrielle Ritzer (Sutton, Mass.) grabbed Bryant's only other top-three finish in diving, a third-place spot in the 3-meter (230.84).
