BRYANT WOMEN'S TENNIS TAKES PART IN EASTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team competed at the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships over the weekend at Army.
Sophomore Claudia Hidalgo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) opened with a 6-0, 6-1, win over Molly Montgomery of Holy Cross before falling to Amherst's Jordan Brewer in the second round of flight A singles. She picked dup another victory in the singles alpha consolation bracket, defeating Fordham's Hanna Fritzinger, 8-3.
Stephanie Smyers (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also won her opening round match in flight C, upsetting Tristany Leikem of Rhode Island, 0-6, 6-1, 10-6, before losing to Pittsburgh's Jocelyn Lu in the second round. The freshman tacked on another win in the singles beta consolation bracket with an 8-5 victory over UConn's Lucy Nutting.
In flight B singles, Lucy Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) dropped to Amherst's Laura Danzig in the first round but went on to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket, losing to Sacred Heart's Gabi Kaldan, 8-1.
In doubles action, the tandem of Katharine Francazio (Cranston, R.I.) and Irma Rodriguez Lockwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) bowed out in the opening round of flight A but would go on to make it to the consolation finals, a bracket made up of doubles teams from both flights. After a first round bye, the duo knocked off teams from St. Bonaventure and Holy Cross before coming up short against Marist.
The Bulldogs will travel to take on St. Francis (NY) on Saturday, Oct. 2.
