BRYANT WOMEN'S TENNIS SWEEPS WEEKEND COMPETITION IN NEW YORK CITY

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team traveled to New York City over the weekend and returned with a pair of dominating 7-0 wins against Northeast Conference foes, Wagner and St. Francis (NY).

On Saturday against Wagner, the Bulldogs cruised through all three doubles matches, claiming the third by default, and went on to sweep the singles competition with every player winning in straight sets.

The tandem of Irma Rodriguez Lockwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Katharine Francazio (Cranston, R.I.) headlined doubles action with an 8-0 win at the second spot to help the Bulldogs earn the point.

The Bryant women's tennis team defeated Wagner and St. Francis (NY) in New York City over the weekend.

Sophomore Claudia Hidalgo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) picked up the win at No. 1 singles, defeating Nicole Arnold, 6-0, 6-1. From there, Lucy Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) and Stephanie Smyers (Pittsburgh, Pa.) rolled past the competition with a couple of impressive 6-0, 6-0 victories at second and third singles, respectively. May Vickers (Montrose Colo.) captured No. 4 singles after her opponent retired from the match while Valeria Couto Cuervo (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) completed the sweep by defeating Diana Ciavarella, 6-0, 6-1.

The Black and Gold stayed with their winnings ways on Sunday against St. Francis (NY), picking up the early point with a clean sweep in doubles competition.

The Bulldogs would once again claim every singles match in straight sets, starting with Hidalgo's 6-0, 6-0 win over Ewa Opala at the No. 1 slot. Couto-Cuerco and Rodriguez-Lockwood would also both add a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories in fifth and sixth singles, respectively.

With the pair of wins, the Bulldogs now stand at 3-1 in dual-meet competition and return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 9 when they host Monmouth at 11:00 a.m.
