Women's tennis falls 5-2 in season finale

Seawolves top Bulldogs, 5-2, on Sunday

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Bryant University women's tennis team saw its 2011-12 season come to a close on Sunday, as the Bulldogs suffered a 5-2 setback against Stony Brook University at University Courts.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs end the year with a single-season high 11 victories set during the 2011-12 campaign, as the program will shed its reclassification status entering 2012-13 and will be finally eligible to participate in the Northeast Conference Tournament next spring.

Stony Brook improved to 10-6 by virtue of the win.

The Seawolves soared out of the gates by sweeping all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Moving to singles, that success continued as Stony Brook won 4-of-6 matches to prevail by three points.

Bryant took two points by virtue of wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles bouts. Sophomore Stephanie Smyers (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win in thrilling fashion over Salome Mkervalidze at the #5 match, while freshman Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) won her match at #6 by default.

The Bulldogs return a core group of players that will help them vie for a league title in 2012-13, including last year's NEC Player of the Year in junior Claudia Hidalgo (Guayaquil, Ecuador), along with junior Lucy Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand), sophomores Marcela Brandao (Santo Andre, Brazil), May Vickers (Montrose, Colo.) and Smyers, while rookies Bird and Devlin-Ann Ammendola (Garden City, N.Y.) will return with another year's worth of experience under their belts.
