Women's tennis opens season
WOMEN'S TENNIS CLOSES OUT WEEKEND PLAY AT THE STONY BROOK INVITATIONAL
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team opened the 2012 fall season over the weekend at the Stony Brook Invitational.
Junior Marcela Brandao (Santo Andre, Brazil) led the way for the Bulldogs winning her opening match in both the singles and doubles competitions. Brandao defeated Marist's Malissia Carlay, 8-4, in the opening round of the flight B before falling to Sue Ghosh of Amherst College, 6-0, 6-3.
Brandao teamed with sophomore Devlin-Ann Ammendola (Massapequa, N.Y.) in the doubles competition to defeat the duo of Lisa Setyon/Chloe Pike of Stony Brook, 8-4, in the opening round. In the quarterfinals however, the Bulldogs came up short, falling to eventual flight runners-up Gabby Winter and Logan Antill of Navy, 8-5.
Among the other victories for the Black and Gold, Stephanie Smyers (Pittsburgh, Pa.) defeated URI's Karolina Wojciak, 8-4, in the opening round of flight C and freshman Mariah Korn (Tiverton, R.I.) over-matched Gabriela Sarrate of Fairleigh Dickinson en route to an 8-1 win in flight E.
Bryant continues its fall season on Wednesday, Sept. 19, when it hosts Providence College for a non-conference match in Smithfield. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
