Bulldogs come up short at Villanova, 4-3

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – All knotted at 3-3 on a rainy day in Philadelphia with the final and deciding match yet to be determined, the Bryant University women's tennis team came up just short at Villanova, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon.

The Bird sisters, Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) and Lucy Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand), took care of business in doubles play defeating the duo of Kust/West, 8-4, however the Wildcats would secure the other two doubles' matches to win the point.

In singles play, senior Marcela Brandao (Santo Andre, Brazil) topped Smith, 6-1, 6-3, in the #2 spot, while Devlin-Ann Ammendola (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Lucy Bird both defeated their opponents in the #4 and #5 singles positions, respectively, to tie the overall score, 3-3.

In the #6 singles match, freshman Jovana Hadzi-Tanovic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) took her opposition, Wesleigh Donadio, to the wire, forcing a tiebreaker in the second set, coming up just short, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8).

The Bulldogs will continue Spirng Break action Thursday when they visit Mount St. Mary's for just their second Northeast Conference match of the season.
