Bulldogs top Albany, 4-3, Friday

WOMEN'S TENNIS PICKS UP BIG WIN VS. ALBANY FRIDAY IN SMITHFIELD

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team won a grueling match against the University at Albany Friday afternoon in Smithfield, 4-3.

In doubles play, Lucy Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) and Irma Rodriguez Lockwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) picked up an 8-5 victory over Mireille Hermans and Sarah Iannone in the #2 spot, while Stephanie Smyers (Pittsburg, Pa.) and Devlin-Ann Ammendola (Massapequa, N.Y.) topped Cat Crummey and Cheryl Kukkoneu, 8-5, to pick earn the double point for Bryant.

In singles action, Lucy Bird defeated Iannone, 6-1, 6-2,  in the #6 spot, while Ammendola picked up another victory in the #4 spot, topping Kukkoneu, 6-2, 6-2. The deciding match for Bryant came in the #2 spot when Marcela Brandao (Santo Andre, Brazil) defeated Kristen Scott, 7-6, 6-3, avenging her loss from last season. 

"Overall, it was a great win," said Bryant head coach Barbara Cilli. "We lost to them last season and they are a very good team."

"After a tough match last week against Quinnipiac this was a great win for our team heading into the home stretch."

The Bulldogs will host Army on Friday before closing out Northeast Conference action at Sacred Heart on Saturday.
