Campfield and Luiggi reach B Doubles Finals at Stony Brook Classic over the weekend
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team reached a new level of success at the 10th Annual Stony Brook Classic over the weekend, reaching the finals in the B Doubles bracket.
The sophomore duo of Ashanti Campfield (Startford, Conn.) and Nina Luiggi (Nottingham, England) played their way to the finals of the B Doubles group, falling to the pair of Haley/Allen from Army, 6-4. The finals appearance marks the first time in program history that a pair has reached the finals in Stony Brook.
Campfield and Luiggi won in a tie breaker (4), beating Navy's Balsavage/Rogers, 7-6. The pair battled through the quarterfinals (6-3) and semifinals (6-4), defeating a duo from the host school and a twosome from St. John's.
The Bulldogs also found success in singles, with sophomore Stefanie Arroyo (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) reaching the semifinals of the D Singles bracket.
Arroyo sailed through the first match against Nouri of Fairfield, 6-1, 6-2. After splitting the first two games in the quarterfinals, she defeated Channell of Navy in the third game, 10-6. Sunday, Arroyo lost in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-2, to Arranz of St. John's, who went on to win the singles flight.
All together, the team gathered a handful of wins in the tournament, including a trip to the semifinals of the D Singles Backdraw bracket for senior Jovana Hadzi-Tanovic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro).
The Black and Gold continue fall play with the Army Invitational in West Point, beginning on Thursday, September 24.
