Leonard, Sjoberg compete at USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championship

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Briana Leonard (Westford, Mass.) competed over the weekend at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championship at Dartmouth College, on behalf of the Bryant University women's tennis team, contending in singles, as well as doubles, alongside sophomore Linnea Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden).

Leonard was met with a difficult draw, facing Andrea Kavakian of Columbia University in the first round of singles, where she fell, 0-6, 0-6.

"Briana was facing a tough opponent in the blue-chip freshman from California," said head coach Barbara Cilli. "She tried to mix things up on Kavakian, but to no avail."

The pair of Leonard/Sjoberg drew partners Shea Flanagan and Zaina Zaki of UConn in the first round of doubles, losing 3-8.

"The girls [Leonard/Sjoberg] got off to a strong start, with aggressive net play that kept their opponents guessing, but Uconn was the steadier team that day," said Cilli.

The tournament marks the last fall match for the Bulldogs. The Black and Gold will return to competition on Saturday, Jan. 30 at the UConn Invitational.
