Bulldogs split, 1-1, in opening weekend

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team split contests over the weekend, defeating Brandeis, 6-1, on Saturday, before falling to Boston University, 6-1, on Sunday.

The Bulldogs (1-1) hosted their first official opponent of their 2016 campaign at Rally Point in Greenville, R.I., where they found their first win of their competitive season over the Judges (0-1), 6-1. The Black and Gold swept in doubles play with Bryant twosome of sophomores Ashanti Campfield (Stratford, Conn.) and Nina Luiggi (Nottingham, England), finding Bryant's largest margin, 6-1.

The Bulldogs managed their other five points in singles play, as junior Ryan Brown (Austin, Texas) set the pace, trumping Haley Cohen, 7-6, 6-0, in the No. 1 singles match. Luiggi followed suit, defeating Olivia Leavitt, 6-3, 6-2, before Campfield edged out Emily Eska, 6-4, 6-4. Junior Marion Bouillin (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore Stefanie Arroyo (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) rounded out the Bryant point spread, as Bouillin won, 6-3, 6-1, and Arroyo dominated, 6-0, 6-3.

On Sunday, the Terriers (3-0) swept in doubles play, taking an early 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs. The Bryant pair of Bouillin and Brown played Boston University's Johanna Hyoty and Lauren Davis closely, before being defeated, 7-6. Arroyo found the only Bulldog point, conquering Kate Shemasko in three games, 4-6, 7-6, 11-9.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, February 20, when they take on in-state foe Brown University at 2 p.m. in the capital.
