Bulldogs split matches over the weekend, sweep Hawks, 7-0, on Sunday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Following a dominant, 6-1, Northeast Conference win at LIU Brooklyn, the Bryant University women's tennis team split matches with nonconference foes, falling, 6-1, at Massachusetts on Saturday, before sweeping Hartford, 7-0, in Smithfield on Sunday.

Saturday

The Minutewomen (12-6) started off winning 2-of-3 doubles matches, earning the first point of the day. The Bulldogs' (5-7, 2-0 NEC) pair of sophomore Linnea Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and classmate Stefanie Arroyo (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) battled their way to a 6-0 victory over UMass' Aarzoo Malik and Brittany Collens in No. 3 doubles.

The Minutewomen continued to score in singles play, taking the first four singles points. Sjoberg won the first set in the No. 2 singles slot, beating Malik, 7-5, before Malik rallied to win, 6-2, 6-1, in the final two sets. Sophomore Ashanti Campfield (Stratford, Conn.) broke the Minutewomen's streak and earned Bryant's only point of the match in No. 5 singles, as she conquered Collens, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6. UMass went on to win the final singles matchup, taking the 6-1 triumph over Bryant on Saturday.

Sunday

The Bulldogs dominated the Hawks (4-13), holding the visitors scoreless for a 7-0 victory in Smithfield. Bryant's pair of junior Ryan Brown (Austin, Texas) and classmate Briana Leonard (Westford, Mass.) secured the No. 1 doubles match, 6-0, while Sjoberg and Arroyo defeated their adversaries by the same margin in No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Nina Luiggi (Nottingham, England) and Campfield trumped Hartford's Karolina Pilip and Emily Lindsley, 6-1, in No. 2 doubles, finishing the sweep in doubles play.

The Bulldogs maintained their edge over the Hawks through singles play, as the Black and Gold overpowered the visitors one through six. Brown held Emily Sneddon scoreless, winning, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 1 singles, while Campfield routed Lindsley by the same margin in No. 4 singles. Luiggi and Arroyo each beat their opponents 6-0, 6-1, in No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Leonard moved past Hannah Golman, 6-4, 6-4, in No. 2 singles, while senior Jovana Hadzi-Tanovic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) won 6-1, 6-0 over in Angela Sabino in No. 6 singles.
