Bryant defeats Lamar in Southland First Round
SAN ANTONIO -- The ninth-seeded Bryant women's tennis team made history on Thursday as it defeated eighth-seeded Lamar in the first round of the 2024 Southland Conference Women's Tennis Championships.
The win is Bryant's first postseason win as a member of the Southland Conference and advances the Bulldogs into a Friday matchup with top-seeded Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
How it Happened
- Bryant got off to a quick start, winning the top two doubles spots to secure the point. Caitlyn Munson and Natalia Vela opened with a 6-3 victory at No. 1, while Marie Jose Hernandez Diaz and Yahli Noy secured the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
- In singles, the Bulldogs capped a 4-0 win with victories at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5.
- Diaz made quick work at No. 4, earning 6-3 and 6-1 victories to make it 2-0.
- Vela then secured a 6-2, 7-5 victory at the top spot to put Bryant on the cusp.
- Munson closed it out as she won in three sets at No. 5. She won the first set 6-3 before falling 6-2 in the second. Munson rallied back to win 6-2 in the third.
Notes and Notables
- Thursday marked Bryant's first postseason victory since it won the 2022 NEC Championship against LIU.
- Vela improves to 8-5 overall in dual matches.
