WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL RECEIVES NASSANEY PROGRAM OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Bryant University women's volleyball team was honored at halftime of Thursday's basketabll game as recipients of the Nassaney Memorial Program of the Year. |
The Bryant University women's volleyball team was presented with the Shawn M. Nassaney Award as Program of the Year for 2008-09 during halftime of a recent women's basketball team in February. The award, given to one team at the conclusion of each academic year, recognizes outstanding achievement in the classroom, on the court and in the community.
Supported by the Nassaney Foundation and Bryant's CHAMPS / Lifeskills program, the Nassaney Memorial Program of the Year award is named after former Bryant University track & field and cross country standout who passed away on September 11, 2001 following graduation from Bryant.
Through a points system, teams that demonstrate excellence in all areas of academics, athletics and community will receive this prestigious honor.
The 2008-09 women's volleyball team posted a 7-6 record in their
first year of Division I competition, including a 2-1 mark against
local rival Providence College. Eight players received Northeast
Conference Academic honors including a perfect 4.0 GPA by senior
Monika Sattler.
Senior Maureen Atkins was the recipient of the Omar Shareef Spirit
Award and team's Bulldog Award and served as co-chair of the
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) that organized
several successful events including a can food drive, campus
cleanup and "Kids Day" program in the spring.
Previous winners of the Shawn M. Nassaney Program of the Year include women's lacrosse (2006-07) and women's soccer (2007-08).
