Scocca sets block assist record, VB falls

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Long Island University hit an impressive .458 as a team and put up 18 blocks, allowing the Bryant University volleyball team just one lead all afternoon to win in straight sets, 3-0, Saturday at the Chace Athletic Center.

Annika Foit paced the match with 15 kills and a .462 attack percentage while Bianca Muniz's six blocks led the contest. Senior Jazmin Stoner (Durango, Colo.) led the Bulldogs (9-14, 3-5 Northeast Conference) with 10 kills and a team-high .353 hitting percentage. The Blackbirds (12-11, 6-1) took 25-14, 25-19 and 25-18 wins for the 3-0 match victory.

LIU's Vera Djuric collected a match-best 40 assists on the afternoon and served up a pair of aces with eight digs in the outing while Chelsey Stanton's 12 digs were a match high.

For the Bulldogs, junior Emily Kaup (Chandler, Ariz.) and senior Maria Scocca (Melrose, Mass.) put up two blocks apiece. With her second block of the day – and the 419th block assist of her career – Scocca set a new program mark in the category. She now owns the top marks for block assists and blocks per set, and sits third all time in total blocks with 498. Junior Jadith Lorenzo (Lawrence, Mass.) handed out 24 helpers for the home side on the day, and Elena Lohr (Loveland, Ohio)'s seven digs paced Bryant.

The Bulldogs host NEC foe Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday at 1:00 p.m., as the Black and Gold celebrate 2011 Senior Day at the Chace Athletic Center.
