Bulldogs fall to Red Storm

VOLLEYBALL DROPS OPENING MATCH OF KAISER CLASSIC TO ST. JOHN'S FRIDAY

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University volleyball team fell to St. John's on Friday, 3-0, in the opening match of the Kaiser Classic in Queens, N.Y.

The Bulldogs were once again led by freshman Claire Van Dyk (New Richmond, Wis.), who finished with six kills. Junior Alexandria Clyburn (Chesterville, Ga.) added a contest-high four blocks and five kills, and senior Jadith Lorenzo (Lawrence, Mass.) finished with 16 assists and five digs.

The Red Storm improve to 8-1 with the victory as they continue their early-season success. Sophomore Aleksandra Wachowicz recorded a match-high 14 kills to go along with senior Sabina Piegza's 26 assists. Karlin Palgutova and Milica Krstojevic each registered nine kills, with the latter posting an impressive .750 hitting percentage.

The Red Storm also benefited from six Bulldog service errors, as well as six aces of their own en route to the 3-0 victory. Gabriela Petkova added 14 digs, while Shawna-Lei Santos finished with 11 to pace the St. John's defense.

Van Dyk's six kills add to her team-leading 89 kills through eight matches in what has been a phenomenal freshman campaign thus far.

The Bulldogs, who slip to 3-5 on the season, will look to get back on track Saturday, continuing play at the Kaiser Classic in Queens. The Black and Gold will gear up for two matches against familiar foes in St. Francis (NY) at 1 p.m. and Fairleigh Dickinson at 5 p.m.
