Van Dyk, DePouw pace Bulldogs to 3-1 win over Princeton

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Paced by a season-best 17 from sophomore Claire Van Dyk (New Richmond, Wis.), a trio of Bulldogs registered double-digit kills and two recorded double-doubles as the Bryant University volleyball team toppled Princeton University, 3-1, to win its second-straight match at the 2013 Bryant Invitational Friday night.

Van Dyk added a contest-high 16 digs in the effort to pick up her first double-double of the year for the Bulldogs (2-11), while junior captain Elena Lohr (Loveland, Ohio) earned her first as well with 10 kills and 13 digs in the four-set match. Freshman Sara DePouw (Oconto, Wis.) had a strong evening of her own, tying her personal best with 14 kills, adding nine digs to the performance.

The Tigers (3-5) saw a match-best 19 kills and a double-double (11 digs) from sophomore Kendall Peterkin, while Nicole Kincade served up four aces with eight kills and a match-high five blocks. Sarah Hanna added 11 kills, as Sarah Daschbach picked up 16 digs to tie Van Dyk's contest-best outing defensively.

The match was tight throughout all four sets, with Bryant taking a 2-0 match lead on back-to-back 25-23 set victories. Princeton cut that lead in half in the third, 25-19, but the Tigers couldn't keep Van Dyk and the Bulldogs at bay, as the hosts got eight fourth-set kills from their offensive leader en route to a 25-22 win and the four-set match victory.

Sophomore setter Jana Kmec (Stratford, Conn.) put up 45 assists with four kills of her own, while classmate Taylor Onoyan (Crystal Lake, Ill.) matched the contest mark at the net with five blocks. Rookie Mallory Wilczynski (Cary, Ill.) chipped in four more with 13 digs and nine kills.

The Black and Gold posted season highs in both kills, with 61, and assists, with 53, in the winning effort and added 64 digs, good for their second-highest total so far in 2013.

The Bulldogs will go for their first winning streak of the season when Bryant Invitational play resumes Saturday. Bryant will host Stony Brook at 12:00 p.m. and wrap up tournament play Saturday night with a 7:00 p.m. bout against St. John's.
