Bulldogs defeat Blue Devils in straight sets Saturday afternoon

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Freshman Sophie Hoekstra (Millersville, Md.) led the Bryant University volleyball team in kills and points, helping the Bulldogs to a three-game sweep over Central Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (12-10, 4-1 NEC) took the first two sets, 25-20, but the Blue Devils (10-8, 2-3 NEC) gave them a run in the third game, tying the set on six occasions and resulting in a Bryant 25-22 victory.

Hoekstra finished the match with 10 kills and 11 points, notching the majority of her tallies in the second and third sets.

Senior Debora Magalhaes (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) topped the charts in digs for the Black and Gold (16), while also recording an ace in the first set.

Sophomore Ally Lunsford (Mineola, Fla.) led the Bulldogs with six blocks and a total of seven kills on the day. Freshman Kristin Kingi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) also had a stand out performance, tallying nine kills, six digs and a total of nine points in the three sets.

Sophomore setter, Vika Nesterov (Kfar Saba, Israel) dealt out a team-high of 37 assists, while also finishing the competition with four and a half points for the Bulldogs.

The Black and Gold continues their four-game home series, battling Holy Cross on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
