Volleyball splits second day of Air Force tournament

COLORADO SPRINGS, C.O. – The Bryant women's volleyball team split its Saturday matches at the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic, losing 3-1 to Air Force in the first match before defeating the University of Rhode Island 3-1 in the night cap for their first victory of 2023. The Bulldogs finished the  tournament with a 1-2 record. Aubrey Lapour was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Bryant 1, Air Force 3 (12-25, 17-25, 26-24, 20-25)

Records: Bryant (0-2), Air Force (2-0)

Location: Cadet East Gym (Colorado Springs, C.O.)

COACH GARLACY'S COMMENTS

" Excited for our first win tonight!  We were led by junior Aubrey Lapour with 17 kills, followed by freshman Brookelyn Talmadge with 12 and 4 blocks.  Freshman setter Madison Koeller had a double double with 16 assists and 10 digs.  At one point we had libero Josie Deluga on the court with five freshmen.  We have many options and will continue to learn and grow with experience."

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs Air Force)

  • Set 1 – Air Force dominated early in the first set and would hold Bryant to just 12 points. 

  • Set 2 –Air Force would ride their first set's momentum and hold off a much better Bryant showing; winning 25-17

  • Set 3 –Down 0-2 Bryant would battle back and pick up the win in overtime with a score 26-24

  • Set 4 – Despite a good effort by Bryant in the 4th, Air Force would win the match on an Ashley Bible kill.

STATS

  • The Bulldogs hit just .070, while Air Force finished at .291.

  • Bryant only collected 3 blocks in the entire match.

  • Three Air Force players collected double digit kills (Dedo, Tschudor, and Harvey)

  • Isik posted 17 assists for the Black and Gold

  • Aubrey Lapour led all players in the match with 14 kills.

Bryant 3, Rhode Island 1 (27-25, 17-25, 30-28, 25-19)

Records: Bryant (1-2), URI (0-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs URI)

  • Set 1- Bryant and Rhode Island battled it out and kept it close, eventually forcing overtime where the the Bulldogs would win 27-25

  • Set 2- The Rams would  battle back in the second set and hold the Black and Gold to just 17 points.

  • Set 3- The Bulldogs and Rams would battle to yet another competitive overtime period where Bryant would eventually gain the necessary two point advantage and win 30-28.

  • Set 4-The Black and Gold would build off their momentum in the third set and finish off URI following a service error from the Ram's Samantha Blahut.

STATS

  • The Bulldogs still managed to pull out the match victory even  though their  hit% (.134) was lower than URI's (.139)

  • Kills on the match remained relatively even (Bryant: 51- URI: 49)

  • Bryant's Lapour and Talmadge both posted double digit kills for Bryant

  • URI's Butler and Hendricks both collected 18 assists on the evening.

  • Aubrey Lapour led all players in the match with 17 kills.

MATCH NOTES

Freshman Brookelyn Talmadge collected 12 kills in just her third career collegiate match.
