Bulldogs go 1-1 on Day Two at Friar Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bryant women's volleyball team split its second day at the Friar Classic. The Bulldogs would win their first match against the Peacocks from Saint Peter's University and would fall to Providence College in five sets. Bryant finishes the tournament 2-1 and are now 7-4 on the season.  Josie Deluga and Aubrey Lapour were named to the All-Tournament Team.

COACH GARLACY'S COMMENTS

"Our outsides Ari and Aubrey set the tone for the match. Joey led the defense and Ari led the team with 7 aces. London and Aubrey did a great job blocking."

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs Saint Peter's)

  • Set 1 – Bryant set the tone early in the first set by going on a 5-0 run that included two kills from Nadine Abdat. Saint Peter's would make things competitive late, narrowing the score to 22-19. Bryant however would go on and win the set 25-20 on an Aubrey Lapour kill. Arianna Ugolini had 5 kills in set and Abdat hit .375.

  • Set 2 – The Bulldogs and Peacocks would go back and forth early in the second before Bryant would go on an 11-2 run to make the score 19-7. Saint Peter's would only manage six more points before falling 25-13. eLondon Hunt hit 1.000 with 3 kills and Josie Deluga had 4 digs.

  • Set 3- The Peacocks would show resilience and keep things close with Bryant throughout the third set. They would begin to pull ahead halfway through the set with the help of kills from Savina Trujillo  and Georgia Remmers. Josie Deluga would help Bryant get back into it with back-to-back service aces. However, Bryant  would drop the third set by a score of 25-21. Melis Isik would record all of her 4 assists for the match in the third. Carrina Barron and Carolina Camacho would join Deluga with service aces in the set.

  • Set 4- Bryant would bounce back and take control early in the deciding set with service aces from Koeller and critical kills by Lapour. The Bulldogs would go ahead by 5 on a Lea Mackey kill and would hold the Peacocks scoreless for the rest of the match. Three of the final five points would come as a result of Arianna Ugolini service aces. The Black and Gold would seal the victory on a Nadine Abdat kill. Final Score 25-15.

  • Arianna Ugolini posted a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs. (She also had 7 service aces).

  • Carolina Camacho has posted 20+ assists 5 times this season (24 vs Saint Peter's).

COACH GARLACY'S COMMENTS

"What a hard fought battle tonight. I am so proud of how hard we fought to come back in the fourth set.  Carolina played such great defense. Our middles played great and Mo was a serving weapon.  Both Ari and Aubrey swung aggressive but Providence played outstanding defense.  On our side Josie and Carrina were tough as nails."

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs Providence)

  • Set 1 – Bryant and PC played close to open the match but then fell behind early. The Bulldogs would rally to tie the score at 12 and would take the lead for good with the help of kills from Arianna Ugolini and Brookelyn Talmadge. The Black and Gold would out hit the Friars. 422 to .182 in the first set and had 21 total kills and Carrina Barron would post 8 digs.

  • Set 2 – Bryant would get out to a 10-7 lead with help of kills from Nina Gavin, Ugolini and Talmadge. PC would rally and tie the score at 12 and take the lead on a Lyric Berry kill. Providence would win the set 25-21 on a kill by Macy Taylor. Four Bulldogs recorded block assists in the set and Josie Deluga had 6 digs.

  • Set 3- The two teams would play an extremely tight third set with PC maintaining a steady advantage throughout. After falling behind 19-14 the Black and Gold would battle back thanks to back-to-back kills from Aubrey Lapour and Morgan Smith. Providence would win the set 25-23

  • Set 4- Facing elimination, the Bulldogs would fight to stay alive thanks to 5 kills from Aubrey Lapour and 4 from Arianna Ugolini. Carolina Camacho put up 6 assists in the fourth and helped Bryant win by a score of 25-23.

  • Set 5- The Friars would start the final set on a 5-0 run, putting the Bulldogs in an early hole. Despite fighting back to narrow the deficit at 7-4, PC would hold on to win 15-7 and ein the match 3-2. Nina Gavin had two kills for Bryant in the fifth and Madison Koeller had a service ace.
