Bryant falls to UMBC on Friday

SMITHFIELD, R.I.– The Bryant women's volleyball team fell to UMBC to open conference play on Friday night in a 3-0 sweep. The Bulldogs now stand at 10-8 overall on the season as they prepare for a three match road trip.

"Our young team battled at times showing glimpses of the future.  It's very bright as we keep improving every day."

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs UMBC)

  • Set 1- The Retrievers got out an eight point lead on a  Micheala De Marzi kill. The Bulldogs would try to make a comeback bid but UMBC would hold on to win 25-14. Arianna Ugolini led the Black and Gold in the set with 3 kills.

  • Set 2- In the second set, Bryant would settle in and keep things close. Bryant would go up 25-24 but the set would be extended where the Retrievers would win 28-26. Aubrey Lapour and Arianna Ugolini each had 4 kills in the set and Carolina Camacho had 6 assists. 

  • Set 3- In the deciding set, Bryant and UMBC started off close and remained tied through 9. The Retrievers however would go on a 12-2 run to extend their lead to 21-11. With their backs against the wall, Bryant would fight late but UMBC would hold on to win 25-19. Brookelyn Talmadge and Lapour each tallied 3 kills in the final set. 

STATS

  • Aubrey Lapour led the Bulldogs with 8 kills in the match.

  • Arianna Ugolini and Melis Isik each had aces for the black and gold.

  • Morgan Smith led Bryant with 3 block assists

  • Kamani Conteh led the match with 11 kills for UMBC.

  • Aysia Miller (15) and Serin Maden (13) each had double digit assists

MATCH NOTES

  • Miranda Jantzen sets a season high for single game block assists with 2 vs the Retrievers. She has recorded at least one block assists in her last two matches.

  • Carolina Camacho has recorded 10+ assists in her previous 9 matches

  • This marks the first time Bryant has lost to UMBC at home in program history.
