Bryant, CCSU meet in home-and-home this weekend

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team renews a rivalry this weekend when it faces Central Connecticut in a home-and-home on Friday and Saturday.

The two-game series starts Friday at Conaty Park with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch. Game two will be played in New Britain, Conn., on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Friday - Coleman Picard vs. Dominic Niman
Saturday - Brett Wichrowski vs. Jake Neuman

  • Picard bounced back nicely last week as he continues his return to the mound. He struck out five, walked one and allowed just one hit over 3.0 scoreless innings. 
  • Wichrowski shook off some early rust to strike out five and allow just two hits in 3.0 innings last week.  

Bryant vs. CCSU

  • Bryant and CCSU grew to be one of the best rivalries in the NEC over the last several years. The two teams met eight times in the last three NEC tournaments. 
  • Bryant owns a 47-18 all-time record against the Blue Devils. The Bulldogs went 6-4 against CCSU in the NEC Tournament.  

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Bryant enters the weekend at 22-18 overall. The Bulldogs are coming off an 8-4 victory over Merrimack on Wednesday. 
  • Jake Gustin hit a grand slam and drove in five runs on Wednesday and is now hitting .358 with six home runs, 33 RBI and 41 runs scored. Gustin is tied for third in DI program history with 172 runs scored.
  • Derek Smith continues to see it well, entering the weekend hitting .342 with eight home runs, 36 RBI and 29 runs scored. 
  • Zac Zyons has done a bit of everything for Bryant this year, starting games in LF, CF, RF, 3B and SS. He made a remarkable catch on Wednesday that was No. 1 on Sportscenter Top 10.
  • Zyons is hitting .254 with a .412 OBP and 21 runs scored.
