Football welcomes Maine on Saturday

BULLDOGS HOST MAINE ON SATURDAY AT BULLDOG STADIUM

Game Notes

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Looking to turn it around after an 0-2 start to the season, the Bryant University football team returns to Bulldog Stadium and welcomes the No. 21/25 University of Maine on Saturday, Sept. 15 in a non-conference game.

The Matchup

Saturday's meeting will be the second between the two schools with the first coming last season. The Black Bears earned a 28-13 victory in Orono, Maine in the season-opener for both teams.

How to Follow

Fans that can't make it to Bulldog Stadium on Saturday can follow all the action live on 1240 WOON, onworldwide.com and NECFrontRow.com. All 11 Bulldogs games this fall will be broadcasted live on 1240 WOON and all six home games can viewed free of charge on NECFrontRow.com.

Scouting the Black Bears

Maine comes to Smithfield after suffering a 34-3 opening-season loss to Boston College last weekend. The Black Bears kept the game close in the first half and even held a 3-0 lead after one quarter. The Eagles, however, turned it on late in the second quarter, scoring 17 points before the half ended. BC would add 17 more points in the third quarter.

The Black Bears were led by a pair of sacks by junior defensive lineman Michael Cole. For his efforts, Cole was named the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) National Defensive Lineman of the Week. Maine also features four other preseason All-CAA members, including tight end Justin Perillo and wide receiver Maurice McDonald.

Last season, Maine advanced all the way to the FCS quarterfinals, falling to Georgia Southern. The Black Bears were ranked eighth in the final national poll in 2011 and are currently ranked No. 25 in the Fathead.com/Sports Network Poll.

Brown earns third-career Gold Helmet

Senior running back Jordan Brown (Glastonbury, Conn.) was awarded his third New England Football Writers Association Gold Helmet Award by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Wednesday at Harvard University. Brown rushed for 125 yards and scored his 35th-career rushing touchdown last weekend against Saint Francis (PA). He won the award twice during the 2010 season.

Records could fall on Saturday

Brown and junior wide receiver Jordan Harris (Lincoln University, Pa.) could make Saturday a very historic day at Bulldog Stadium. Two of the most exciting players in Bulldogs history, Brown and Harris have a chance to break the career rushing record and receiving record, respectively. Brown is 91 yards shy of Andre McLeod's program record of 3,521 career rushing yards and Harris is just 75 yards away from Justin Kix's program record of 1,650 receiving yards.

CAA comes to town

For just the second time in school history a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) will venture to Smithfield on a Fall Saturday. The only other CAA member to visit Bulldog Stadium was Hofstra during the 2009 season. The Pride came away with a 40-24 victory over the Bulldogs on a rainy Saturday in September. The CAA is home to five National Champions with Richmond and Villanova winning back-to-back titles most recently in 2008 and 2009. A member of the CAA has competed for the national championship in seven of the last nine years.

Up Next

The Bulldogs will stay in Smithfield next weekend as they welcome Northeast Conference opponent Duquesne to town on Homecoming and Reunion Weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
