SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University football team completed its second team practice of training camp on Friday morning inside the Conaty Indoor Athletic Center.

BryantBulldogs.com caught up with head coach James Perry and co-captain junior Kevin Lazo (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) following the second practice.

Coach Perry's general thoughts on the first two days

"This is just so much fun being out here. We are two days in and the kids are working really hard for us. It will be even more exciting tomorrow because we'll have the shoulder pads on. It's been a great start."

Coach Perry on something he's been happy with

"I wanted to make sure that we came in in game shape. Camp is not the time to get in shape. Whether it was our run test, which went really well, or these first two practices, it was great to just hit the ground running. I think the guys took conditioning very seriously and so that was a big success."

Coach Perry on what he's looking for over the next week of camp

"These guys, as they compete with each other, hopefully, will get better at executing. We're seeing some flashes from some guys that can really help us this year at every position but to really evaluate and really let them compete positional wise, we have to execute better."

Lazo's general thoughts on the first two days

"Very explosive. Very fast. Trying to bring the young guys across and trying to get them at the same tempo, same level and same intensity that we play with. Compared to last year, this a night-and-day transformation. We've focused a lot on speed, athleticism, and conditioning because a lot of games in the second half hurt us last year and we are trying to prevent that."

Lazo on being back with the team

"Really exciting, honestly. I've been chomping at the bit to come back from the summer. It's been really exciting to see the new faces and the new talent along with seeing the old faces. Seeing what they can do, what have they done over the summer, have they focused on what they needed to train on. Seeing it all on display is really awesome."

Lazo on being a leader

"I really hold myself to a higher standard. Not even in terms of being a captain and being a leader for this team, it's just in terms of leading by example. Always getting in the extra reps, getting the extra push you need. Sometimes, in the back of your head, you think you're tired but seeing the guys working hard around you motivates you to do better."
