Football names captains for 2018 season

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Dillon Guthro (Newburyport, Mass.), Kevin Lazo (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Thomas Costigan (Stamford, Conn.) and Jean Constant (Delray Beach, Fla.) have been named the four Bryant University football captains for the 2018 season, head coach James Perry announced on Friday.

Guthro and Lazo will be serving as captains for the second-straight season, while Costigan and Constant will be first-time captains. The quartet was chosen by a team vote.

A rising redshirt senior, Guthro has been a mainstay on the defensive line during his career, appearing in 33 games. He has played in and started all 22 games since returning from injury in 2016, totaling 86 tackles in those two seasons combined. Guthro will enter the 2018 season with 10 sacks and 25 tackles for a loss in his career.

Lazo, also a rising redshirt senior, has played in all 33 games over the last three seasons after missing his true freshman season. Lazo earned Second Team All-NEC honors last fall after posting 41 tackles, three sacks and 5.5 tackles for a loss. He added two pass breakups and blocked a program record four kicks.

Costigan is coming off one of the greatest defensive seasons in program history last fall. He posted 103 tackles, 11.5 sacks and 17 tackles for a loss on his way to Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year and AP All-American honors. Costigan tied the program record for sacks in a single season and became just the second player in school history to record 100+ tackles in a season.

Constant enjoyed a breakout season in the fall, earning All-NEC honors as wide receiver and kick returner, while also earning STATS FCS All-American honors as a return specialist. He returned 36 kicks for a program-record 989 return yards and two touchdowns. Constant finished second nationally in combined kick return yards and fifth in all-purpose yards per game (148.45). He added 48 catches for 594 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Bulldogs open their 20th season of football on September 1 at home against New Haven.
