Wright earns New England Gold Helmet Award

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Bryant University football junior defensive end Tomas Wright (St. Augustine, Fla.) was named the recipient of the New England Football Writers Association Division I Gold Helmet Award on Wednesday at Harvard University.

Wright becomes the eighth Bulldog to win the Gold Helmet Award and the first since Dalton Easton in 2016. He is the first defensive linemen to win the award since Jeff Covitz in 2014.

Last weekend against Robert Morris, Wright posted seven tackles, 2.5 sacks, four tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles in Bryant's 49-46 victory. His first strip sack ended RMU's first drive and led to Bryant's first touchdown of the day. Then, Wright stripped RMU QB Jimmy Walker with under three minutes left in the game and the Black and Gold were able to run out the clock for the win.

Wright has a career-high 23 tackles through the first four games and also leads the Bulldogs in sacks (4.5) and tackles for a loss (8).

Sponsored by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation, the Gold Helmet Awards presented each Wednesday afternoon at the weekly New England Football Writers Association Media Luncheons that take place at Harvard University's Dillon Field House. For the fourth straight year, the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation is the presenting sponsor for both the weekly and end-of-year Gold Helmet Awards presented to student-athletes from FBS, FCS, Division II and Division III institutions throughout New England.
