Bulldogs fall to UC Davis, 2-1, Thurs. in double OT

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – In a back-and-forth thriller, the Bryant University field hockey team fell to UC Davis, 2-1, in double overtime Thursday evening at the Bryant Turf Complex.

The Bulldogs (2-6) remain winless against the Aggies (3-5) who start their east coast swing off on a good note.

After a hard-fought first half, the two teams stood virtually gridlocked at halftime, 0-0. However, both teams wasted little time getting on the board in the second frame. Just past the 39 minute mark, the Aggies earned a penalty corner and capitalized when Kayla Wigney dished a pass to Agustina Singh who fired a strike toward the goal where Sophia Lisaius tipped it past Megan Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) for the 1-0 lead.

Down 1-0, the Bulldogs quickly responded when Victoria Danby (Lancaster, Mass.) quickly tipped the ball toward Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) after a scramble inside the circle, allowing Bird to score her sixth marker of the year, knotting the game, 1-1.

After another 30 minutes of regulation and a 15 minute overtime period, the score remained 1-1 until midway through the second overtime, Singh found an opening down the right side of the field into the Bryant defensive third where she drew Hancock out of the net just before dropping a pass down to Lauren Copeland who put home the game-winner at the 93:57 mark.

Despite the loss, Hancock was terrific between the pipes making a game-high 11 saves, with senior defender Kelsey Hiltebeitel (Warminster, Pa.) making a game-saving defensive save late in the second half.

The Black and Gold will look to go .500 on the weekend with a win at Dartmouth on Sunday (2 p.m.).
